BIBLE PRESENTATION TO NEW HOME OWNERS
Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit Christian housing ministry, is working to bring decent, affordable shelter to all people in need. Habitat's goal is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the earth. Nearly 24% of the earths' population, including 10 million Americans, lack adquate housing.
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent housing with the help of the homeowner families. Habitat houses are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages. The partner families make payments directly to the local affiliate. Mortgage payments are deposited in a revolving fund and used to build more houses within the community.
HABITAT IS NOT A GIVE-AWAY PROGRAM
In addition to a $500.00 down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor - sweat equity - into building their house and the houses of others. Their labor reduces the cost of the house, increases the pride of ownership and fosters the development of positive relationships.
HABITAT FAMILIES ARE SELECTED ON 3 BASIC CRITERIA:
Need for more adequate housing
Ability to repay the home mortgage
Willingness to work in partnership
The local Habitat Affiliate holds family orientation meetings to help families learn about the program. Once a family has been approved as eligible, its family members begin working to earn 250 hours of sweat equity toward their house or other Habitat homes.
The Board of Directors of the Logan County Habitat for Humanity sets the guidelines for house plans. The number of family members determines the number of bedrooms and bathrooms in a Habitat house. Habitat houses are simple, decent, affordable homes.
