Family Selection Criteria
Dear Applicant:
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry financed through private donations and volunteer labor. Our purpose is to build homes with families who live in inadequate shelter or substandard housing and to sell the houses to them at no profit and no interest.
Please read the following items to see if you have an interest in our ministry and to see if you meet our general guidelines:
1. To qualify you must have housing need, for example: no indoor or poor indoor
plumbing, poor heating, leaks in the roof, overcrowding (three to a bedroom),
unsafe or unsanitary conditions. In addition, you are not able to acquire adequate
housing through traditional homeownership (financing) or renting without being
severely cost-burdened.
2. You must have lived in Logan County for a year.
3. Your total family income should not be much more than the following: $25,100 for
1 person, $28,000 for 2 persons, $32,200 for 3 persons, $35,800 for 4 persons,
$38,720 for 5 persons and $41,600 for 6 persons per year.
4. With your permission, we will verify employment and other income, verify
checking and savings account balances, get a statement from current and
previous landlords and have a credit check done.
5. If you are approved for a Habitat home, we ask that you be willing to join in
programs to learn and practice budgeting, home repair and maintenance. We ask
that you attend the scheduled Habitat for Humanity homeowners’ meetings.
6. If approved for a Habitat home, we require that all adult members of your household,
18 years and older, be willing to work. A minimum of 250 hours of sweat equity is required
per household. At least 100 hours must be prior to construction of your home.
7. If approved for a Habitat home, $500 will be needed for a down payment.
You will have some time to save this money if your family is selected. One
hundred dollars of this amount is required prior to construction beginning on your
home and the balance is due prior to moving into the home.
8. If you are approved for a home and if you meet the sweat equity, down payment
and nurturing requirements, we will then sell you a home below appraised value.
Habitat house payments include taxes, insurance and maintenance fund and will
cost approximately $___________ a month. The house payments will be used by
Habitat to build more houses with other families. This requires that you make these
payments on time.
Families are selected from current applications. Families that meet our criteria but were not selected during this application period are encouraged to apply during the next application period.
If you are interested in Habitat and if you believe you qualify for a home according to the above guidelines, we encourage you to fill out and return the enclosed application.
All information is considered confidential and is to be used only for family selection. The application process takes between two and three months.
We are very willing to help you fill out this application.
Sincerely,
Board of Directors
